Shared Sharing Practice

Kersland School - a night at the Oscars

A pirate ship picture

The main aims of the project were to:

  • promote active learning
  • develop topics based upon the four capacities and the principles of curriculum development
  • provide opportunities for the achievement of individual targets
  • use the draft experiences and outcomes in planning at all stages.

Each class group created a topic using a movie as the stimulus and the Oscars ceremony was chosen as the means of enabling young people to present the product of their learning, to share this with others and to provide an opportunity for recognition of their personal achievement.

Learning activities were carefully planned and developed to address key aspects of Curriculum for Excellence including:

  • Values
  • Purposes (developing the four capacities)
  • Principles
  • Ethos and life of the school
  • Interdisciplinary working
  • Opportunities for personal achievement
  • Experiences and outcomes.

This whole school approach promoted learning by working through the ethos and life of the school, using curriculum areas and subjects, exploring interdisciplinary working and ensuring opportunities for personal achievement and also taking account of the seven principles for curriculum design. Interdisciplinary learning activities were planned to encompass appropriate curriculum areas and subjects, opportunities for personal achievement, and collaborative working relationships which enhanced the positive ethos and life of the school. Suitable pedagogical approaches were used where appropriate to support young people’s development of the four capacities.
