Interactive whiteboards

Introduction to interactive whiteboards

A whiteboard can be used in a similar way to a traditional chalkboard. However, it also enables teachers to deliver lessons interactively using a variety of media, including colour visuals, presentations, video clips and the internet. In addition, a whiteboard enables children, as well as teachers, to manipulate text and objects and make calculations on screen; such interactivity can be highly motivating.

The advent of the interactive whiteboard can be said to have revolutionised the teaching of modern languages and revitalised the approach of those who use it on a regular basis. There are teachers in Scotland who use an interactive whiteboard daily in their teaching and wonder how they ever worked without one. Used effectively, the board is not a replacement for tried and tested methodology, but an addition to and enhancement of traditional teaching approaches.

Sharing practice in using interactive whiteboards

Perhaps you want to put a bid together for IWBs. Or perhaps you are a manager of a school or Local Authority planning whiteboard implementation in schools. If so, the experiences of Dundee City Council might help in your preparation. Read about it on the National Qualifications website.

Interactive whiteboard manufacturers

Four manufacturers thus far dominate the market in interactive whiteboards in Scotland. These are SMARTPrometheanRM and Hitachi. While all whiteboards share many basic features, there are slight variations in functionality from one maker to another.
