Holyrood Secondary School is a large denominational school serving the south side of Glasgow. It is part of the Holyrood Learning Community, which includes ten associated primary schools from a wide geographical area, three nursery schools and two special needs schools.
The Modern Studies and RME departments in Holyrood Secondary incorporated the global dimension into their course programmes, and cross-curricular links are being developed in Social Subjects.
The school had an established pupil Enterprise and Fairtrade group, which had experienced previous success in fundraising for children in Liberia and Malawi. The group had then responded to a presentation by Scottish International Relief, by launching the 2006 Back Pack Appeal. The appeal was a major campaign to provide essential items for Malawian schoolchildren.
Despite some well established links, including nurseries, hospitals and senior citizens’ groups, it was felt that there was a need to bring the Holyrood community closer together, as its catchment area is so widespread. The Enterprise and Fairtrade group was encouraged to involve the wider community as much as possible in the Backpack Appeal.
