Good practice conference - healthy food in schools

Healthy Food in Schools – Celebrating Success and Rising to the Challenge

HMIE and LTS organised a conference that took place on Wednesday 17 September 2008 at the Carnegie Conference Centre, Dunfermline.

The main purpose of the conference was to support and challenge local authorities and schools, through sharing good practice, in ensuring effective implementation of the Schools (Health Promotion and Nutrition) (Scotland) Act 2007.

The intended audience was key staff in schools, local authority officers with responsibility for health promotion and nutrition, and other interested agencies. 

The programme included:

• a keynote address by Adam Ingram, Minister for Children and Early Years
• an update on the Act and information on how HMIE will monitor implementation.

A range of seminars focused on action taken by local authorities and schools to ensure successful implementation of 'Hungry for Success'. Each seminar covered one or more of the following themes:

• Promoting uptake of school meals, including free school meals
• Ensuring anonymity for pupils entitled to free school meals
• Effective transitions, especially from primary to secondary
• Effective consultation
• Effective partnerships
• Links to the curriculum
• Self-evaluation and continuous improvement.
