Hillhead High School is a six-year comprehensive, co-educational, non-denominational secondary school serving the West End of Glasgow.
It has a current roll of around 900 and a staff of around 75. The school is part of the Hillhead Learning Community with seven associated primaries, a bilingual unit and associated nurseries, and the Glasgow Gaelic School. A large number of other primary schools from 40 different postcode areas of Glasgow also send pupils to Hillhead. More than 50 countries are represented in the student body and over 30 different languages are spoken.
The school, which occupies a refurbished listed building, has a broad social mix serving areas of high deprivation and more affluent areas. On Friday afternoons the school offers Minority Activity Time to all pupils, with 60 to 80 different activities on offer from canoeing to skiing, and Chinese dance to chess.

Headteacher Ken Cunningham feels that policy should help to encourage change and is keen to ensure that there is no contradiction between policy and practice. As a result, the school has recently revised its Equality Policy in consultation with staff and parents.
A multicultural, multi-faith approach has been embedded in the curriculum both because it is purposeful and because it arises naturally from the unique pupil mix in the school. The school’s commitment to equality forms part of the programme for students and newly qualified teachers and is part of all staff’s continuing professional development.
For all pupils, performance, attendance and parental involvement are closely monitored and analysed. A home-link teacher and English as an additional language (EAL) staff maintain relationships with parents and carers of bilingual pupils.
