About the centre

Glen Family Centre is located in the Woodfarm area of East Renfrewshire.

The Family Centre is open year round for children aged 0-5 with additional support needs and provides an integrated nursery service during term time. It also runs a holiday playscheme.

The local environment has always been used as a context for the children’s learning. Since attending the Eco Schools Creative Connections course on Canna (which included input from poet Gerry Cambridge), the nursery teacher has been exploring ways in which the outdoor environment can be used to stimulate children’s creativity in terms of art and poetry.

Project aims

The features of learning for the wonderful welly walk in the woods were to:

  • develop independence in dressing
  • listen to other children and adults
  • listen with enjoyment and respond to poetry
  • become familiar with places in the local environment
  • investigate and use a variety of media and techniques
  • become aware of everyday uses of technology and use these appropriately.

A Curriculum for Excellence

The children were also being encouraged to become effective contributors (one of the four capacities of A Curriculum for Excellence), able to communicate in different ways and in different settings.
