Every Friday morning between 9.00 and 9.30am, families in Lochgelly West are invited into school to share in the learning experiences of their children, strengthening partnerships with parents, and transition from nursery to primary.

About Lochgelly West

The school roll is 198 with 12 teaching staff and our nursery provides for 40 children. Lochgelly is deemed to be an area of deprivation and currently the cheapest place in Scotland to buy a house. All stakeholders realise the importance of raising expectations and esteem in terms of achievement and attainment. Our families are very keen to support us in our aspirations for excellence.

How family time started

Family time emerged as part of our response to an HMIE inspection. We had been working to improve transition from nursery to primary for our families, and family time has created the opportunity for families to bring their children into school on a regular basis long before they are due to start nursery.

Aims of the project

We were clear about our aims and what we were hoping to achieve. We wanted:

  • to promote stronger partnership with parents
  • to encourage regular informal contact between school and community
  • to enable families to see what and how learning and teaching takes place in school
  • to create a sense of ownership of learning as a shared responsibility and involve families in their children’s learning
  • to improve transition from nursery to P1 for families
  • to engender mutual trust and respect between pupils, staff and parents
  • to sustain parental involvement throughout Nursery to Primary 7
  • to foster genuine friendships with families in the community.
