Falkirk anti-racist education: introduction

Introduction

Elaine Watts is a Race Equality Teacher with Falkirk Council and has been working with early education centres and schools to promote race equality. All education authorities have a legal duty to promote racial equality.

The case study details the use of Persona Dolls with a nursery class in Kinneil Primary School, to explore issues in global citizenship.

Kinneil Primary School is situated in the town of Bo’ness, north of Falkirk. The school currently has a roll of 253 pupils and also has a 20/20 nursery. The Headteacher is Mrs. Rona Jay.

Aims

The children’s interest and enthusiasm for using Persona Dolls provided a meaningful context to develop communication skills, while promoting global awareness.

The project aims were to:

  • explore similarities as well as differences between people

  • increase the children’s understanding that we have links with people around the world

  • help children to recognise unfairness,

  • and help them to learn skills to challenge unfairness.
