Exploring with paint

Introduction

In these video clips you will see a group of children, all aged between 14 and 15 months old, exploring paint. The children spend almost 45 minutes concentrating on the paint, using their hands, brushes and their bodies to investigate. They are supported by their keyworkers to become involved but also have the right to watch and not join in until they are ready. This is shown through help given to one child to sit down, a reassuring cuddle which is given when needed and the interest and enthusiasm which the keyworkers show. The video clip ends by showing the children having a bath to clean the paint off, with keyworkers continuing to sensitively and respectfully engage with them through what they say, their tone of voice, and what they do.

Description

Establishing respect is one key feature of effective practice when working with babies and young children, together with relationships and responsive care. This video clip illustrates very young children being supported as they explore and discover what they can do with paint. Respect for the children's right to explore in this way is demonstrated through the attentive and sensitive responses of the keyworkers, who encourage the children but do not interfere.

Focus

Children's needs and preferences are taken into account as they explore the paint and keyworkers demonstrate that they are tuned in to the children as they observe them closely and respond to them. Children are supported to express themselves freely and use the paint as they wish.
