The Early Years Framework – Putting the Vision into Action

Child's feet

Introduction

The HMIE/LTS Good Practice conference for early years was held in the Hilton Hotel, Glasgow, on 9 June 2009.

The main purposes of the conference were to:

  • share examples of good practice relating to aspects of the Scottish Government and COSLA’s Early Years Framework
  • hear from early years colleagues who have been successful in taking forward some of the framework’s key messages
  • make important connections to Curriculum for Excellence
  • provide a forum for networking and group discussion
  • create follow-on opportunities for continuing professional development.

The speakers were:

  • Kenneth Muir (HMIE), who welcomed delegates and presented a brief overview of the day
  • Adam Ingram, Minister for Children and Early Years, who set out the Scottish Government’s continuing commitment to support and develop early years provision
  • the keynote speaker was Detective Chief Superintendent John Carnochan, whose work in supporting vulnerable groups through Strathclyde Police’s Violence Reduction Unit is highlighted in the Early Years Framework.

Outcomes from the conference

By attending the conference and/or by using the versatile video clips and other materials from the day, all those with an interest in the wellbeing of children and families are supported in:

  • further exploring connections between Curriculum for Excellence and the Early Years Framework and deepening knowledge about both
  • learning more about innovative practice from across Scotland
  • discussing the key messages from the Early Years Framework and identifying a range of ways to transfer these into practice for the benefit of children and families
  • increasing personal and professional knowledge and understanding
  • continuing dialogue and networking with others interested in supporting children and families.
