Children involved in the project were aged 4-6 years. All children were attending either Dunard Nursery Class or were in P1 at Dunard Primary School.
Play was often discussed as a vehicle in which to merge experiences and promote smoother transitions for pupils transferring from the Nursery to Primary school. The P1 teacher and nursery class teacher at Dunard met to discuss ways in which they could use play to build stronger continuity of children's experiences between nursery and Primary 1 and support transition between the stages.
Staff envisaged a range of learning opportunities being developed through play activities, using various equipment and the school gymnasium on a weekly basis. The aim was to offer and facilitate as wide a variety of activities as possible to assist Nursery and P1 children to make progress in these vital early developmental stages. In previous discussions with pre-school and infant staff it was frequently stressed how important it was to maintain a regular diet of gross motor skill activity, and social involvement with peers and staff.
