Margaret Bennie is a teacher at Deerpark Primary School. Today’s environmental studies lesson is part of an eight-week project about the school. Margaret has already introduced the pupils to the history of the building and she is now teaching them about the different rooms in the school. She begins with a class-based activity, followed by a session in the computer suite.

Ms Bennie has been teaching for the last 26 years at Deerpark Primary. She has taught a variety of classes from P1 to P6 and is currently working with a P1 class.
Ms Bennie has attended an ECDL course and a comprehensive ICT skills training programme. She mentions she is fairly new to ICT and is still getting accustomed to it – the environmental studies project is the first time she has used it in her teaching.
Ms Bennie uses ICT once a week in connection with this project, and she is planning to extend it to other areas of the curriculum and to use it in follow-up activities. She mentions that access to the ICT suite is limited because it is shared between all the teachers.
Deerpark Primary School is located in the small village of New Sauchie, Clackmannanshire. The school is part of the Gartmorn and Delph Community Campus, which includes two other nearby schools.
There are 150 pupils in the school and approximately 60 per cent have free school lunches. There are 30 computers in the school, all connected in a local network. There is a dedicated ICT room and each class is provided with a computer. There is an ICT coordinator, but this is not a full-time post.
In-school ICT training and some local education authority courses such as New Opportunities Fund (NOF) training are available for staff.
