Introduction

One of the key reasons for developing the creative fashion course at Hawick High School was to boost girls’ self-esteem and confidence in a very male-dominated town. The course opens many doors for the girls and requires them to build skills in the areas of creativity, leadership and entrepreneurship as well as social skills.

Hawick High School is situated 50 miles from any major centre and has a catchment area of 26 miles. The school has 1000 pupils and the creative fashion course takes 20 senior pupils each year.

For the 2009/2010 academic year the course intake will include boys for the first time in order to move forward from 'Girls of Ambition' to 'Students of Ambition'.

Pupils from other schools in the area have travelled to Hawick to take part in the course, which is unique to Hawick High School.
