Introduction

Rothesay Academy is a six year comprehensive school on the Isle of Bute.

In session 2004/05 the roll is 465 pupils, with 36 teaching staff. The FME is 42 per cent.

In common with other island communities, there are problems in providing sufficient employment opportunities for young people. The school, Argyll and Bute Council and the wider community are attempting to reverse this trend by using enterprise in education to facilitate regeneration and to encourage sustainability of employment.

The initiative

The Lade Project is a community regeneration initiative funded by  Communities Scotland. It is an example of collaborative working between the school, the Education Department of Argyll and Bute Council and business partners.

Since May 2002 pupils of Rothesay Academy have worked with Fyne Homes, the Lighthouse National Residency Scheme, a local housing association, local landscape architects and sculptors, in the design and redevelopment of the site of a former cotton mill.

A range of 30 pupils from S2-S4 were involved in site visits, surveys, and historical research.
