Condorrat Schools Together: One Scotland

'Condorrat Schools Together: One Scotland' is an ongoing project undertaken by three primary schools: St Helen’s Primary School, Condorrat Primary School, including its Gaelic-medium class, and Baird Memorial Primary School, all in Condorrat, North Lanarkshire. The schools were concerned to make a positive response to the national initiatives in multiculturalism and anti-sectarianism, One Scotland and Building Friendships and Strengthening Communities. The activity also reflects the principles of co-operative learning, which have been promoted in North Lanarkshire schools over a number of years. These approaches are widely recognised as relevant to the development of education for citizenship and the global dimension in the curriculum. (See The Global Dimension in the Curriculum: practitioner resource, Learning and Teaching Scotland 2007)

Initial planning for the project took place in the 2006-2007 session, and the three schools worked together throughout 2007 on a co-operative ‘twinning’ basis on a number of activities culminating in a joint St Andrew's Day Concert. The model has proved a durable one, with similar exercises, albeit with different outcomes, taking place or planned for 2008 and 2009.

In June 2008 the three schools were awarded the Scottish Educational Award for Active Citizenship in recognition of the success of the project.
