Making products with a circus theme

Introduction

St. Mary’s Primary is a denominational school with a non-denominational nursery. In session 2004-05 the roll is 216 in the primary and 80 in the nursery. The school’s intake is from Cumbernauld village and the south western areas of Cumbernauld. The FME is 11.2 per cent. Out of school learning projects linked to enterprise and citizenship are offered to pupils in P5-P7.

The initiative

In 2003 St Mary’s primary entered into a partnership enterprise project with SCIAF to support the Colombian Circus school, Circo Para Todos de Colombia, which rescues street children and teaches them skills to earn a living in their own environment. Pupils and staff set up an enterprise company, Crafty Kids Ltd. to make products with a circus or Latin American theme. The proceeds from the sale of the products were used to support the circus school.
