Carmondean Primary - Pupil Power: Introduction

Carmondean Primary School is a large school with 420 pupils in the primary and 100 in the nursery. Located in Livingston in West Lothian, it serves the Deans area of the town. Pupil participation and involvement in learning have long been at the heart of school life.

Pupils participate in a variety of activities designed to help them become responsible citizens. These include acting as playground mentors in P5/P6, 'buddies' in P7, and Junior Road Safety Officers. There are also opportunities to take part in various committees and groups including the Eco Committee. There is a well established and long running Pupil Council.

Pupil Parliament

Whole school decisions are made at an annual Pupil Parliament. It is here that individual voices are heard in small groups. The groups then decide on their priorities, which are subsequently voted and agreed upon by the whole school at assembly. These suggestions for improvement then feed into the school improvement plan for the year ahead and are taken forward directly by the Pupil Council.

As a natural extension to pupil involvement in the planning process, a group of P7 pupils were challenged to create the school's first ever pupil guidebook.
