Shared Sharing Practice

A child-led summer programme - Bridgeton Family Learning Centre

Bridgeton Family Learning Centre looked at extending consultation with children, by involving them further in planning and reviewing their own learning.

Establishment profile

Bridgeton Family Learning Centre is situated in the East End of Glasgow, a Social Inclusion Partnership area. The centre capacity is 80 FTE places (30 children aged 3-5 and 50 children aged under 3 years). The centre offers extended day provision, with alternative planning during holiday periods.

Aim

Staff working with the 3-5-year-olds consulted the children regarding many issues/situations within the nursery. They offered choices across the curriculum through choice books, boards, etc. In May 2005 all 20 staff members participated in training on Consultation with Children.

The aim was to extend consultation with the children, to look at how staff could involve the children further in both planning and reviewing their own learning. Staff hoped that this would enable children to make informed choices and raise children's confidence and attainment. It was agreed to consult with the children regarding Summer Planning.
