The Badges of Responsibility project gave pupils clear purpose for the activities they were engaged in. Links between subject areas helped to provide rich and meaningful experiences for the children. The children were motivated, enthusiastic and interested in what they were doing.
This PowerPoint presentation - Badges of Responsibility, Connecting the Agendas - demonstrates the wide range of learning opportunities provided by the project.
Badges of Responsibility provided a real-life context for pupils to apply their skills in literacy, numeracy and communication, using creative approaches.
The level of pupil participation in this project was high. Children developed their ideas and solved problems in an enterprising way, throughout the design process of the badges. They used a range of different skills in planning and organisation, creativity and ICT, to contribute to the work of groups, the class and the school community.
Children developed confidence in relating to adults and other children through this work. They experienced having to make informed decisions in a meaningful context, using the results of their self-evaluation. Production of the badges for the whole school gave the children a sense of achievement and pride, and they felt valued throughout the school.
The class had discussed the range and importance of different responsibilities children and adults took on within the school. The variety of badges produced, for example Pupil Councillor, Playground Assistant, Library Monitor and Classroom Assistant, served to reinforce the value that the school community places on giving pupils the opportunity to participate in the social and cultural life of the school.
Parents have gained a greater insight into the breadth of their children's learning experiences. The website has created a lot of interest and many parents were surprised that their children had learned the skills to edit the web pages themselves. Effective communication between home and school and been encouraged and enhanced.
