Whitfield Primary School is a one-stream school with a roll of approximately 180 pupils. The school is situated in the northeast of Dundee. The staffing complement is seven class teachers.
The key staff involved with the project were class teacher Debbie Thom, a teacher at Whitfield Primary School for eight years, and Sue Poutney, a nursery assistant at the school. Debbie is also the ICT Co-ordinator and Citizenship/Enterprise Representative for the school. Sue is a READ nursery assistant and divides her time between Primary 1 and Primary 2 classes at Whitfield Primary. She currently works with Primary 2 children for approximately four hours per week.
Debbie was keen to develop an enterprise project which would develop pupils’ self-esteem, enthuse and motivate them to learn, encourage them to be confident and responsible citizens and learn the skills to become effective contributors in the school and beyond.
Debbie and her Primary 2 class developed an enterprise project, making badges for the pupils who had responsibilities within the school. Making and wearing badges would boost self-esteem. Children could be active participants in the school community. The project integrated different aspects of education for citizenship, ICT and personal, social and health development, developing learning across the four capacities of Curriculum for Excellence.
