Summary

Alva Academy has a long history of fostering international links, and continues to develop the citizenship dimension of its work. The school's success is based on the efforts of a committed community of staff, students and parents.

More recently, effective groundwork by the school's Modern Studies department has successfully bridged the gap between its subject interests and the wider whole school concerns of education for citizenship. Work in education for citizenship is being carried forward by a multidisciplinary working group, chaired by Jane Smith, Principal Teacher of Modern Studies. The results of whole school and departmental audit are currently being processed.

This case study looks at the Academy's European and South African links and how they connect with their project on conflict in the local community.
