This project has helped the children think about the different senses they have and to make use of them in fun ways. It has also helped them with language skills through a lot of discussion around questions such as 'What do you think it will feel like?', 'What does it feel like?' etc. Some of the children have found playing with the gloop and jam very soothing and therapeutic, as have some of the staff. For staff, it has made them think about the learning experiences they are offering the children. They are much more aware of providing the children with sensory opportunities.
Some of the activities that have been tried have not worked very well. They tried painting with treacle and a funnel, but it never dried. The baby room staff have also been unable to try some of the activities due to allergies of the children in the room. Checking for allergies is something they were very careful to do before starting any activity. They also made the mistake of using too much red food colouring in an ice balloon. The children all went home with red hands and arms.
