About the nursery

ABC Nursery is a commercial day nursery run by Clackmannanshire Council. It caters for children from 6 weeks to 12 years old, as it also operates its own and two satellite out-of-school care clubs called Kidzone. It currently has 110 children in the nursery. There are 26 staff members and the nursery has a baby room, a 'tweenies' room, a 2-3 room and a 3-5 room.

What inspired the project?

Two of the nursery staff - Linda Conlan in the baby room and Wendy Brown in the 2-3 room - recently attended a training course on 'senses in all their glory'. They both returned to nursery full of ideas for sensory activities. Linda decided to set up a sensory area in the baby room and Wendy decided to incorporate sensory play into the daily programme in the 2-3 room. She planned to do that by having a sensory week to introduce the children and other staff to some of the new activities she had learned about. In particular, she wanted to introduce them to the messy sensory activities she had herself enjoyed on the course.
