Now entering its ninth year, Scotland’s largest education exhibition just got better. The Scottish Learning Festival 2008 will bring together more than 170 inspirational seminars and up to 200 exhibitors in a packed two-day programme of events. But that’s not all - 2008 will also be the debut year for Topic Surgeries and the Education Showcase.
If you have ever waited behind after a seminar for a chance to chat to the speaker, this new forum is for you. One of the most common requests from delegates at the Scottish Learning Festival is for an opportunity to engage in small-scale discussions with presenters. Topic Surgeries will provide visitors with the opportunity to take part in round-table discussions with presenters in a friendly and informal setting. Topic surgeries will take place within a designated area in the main exhibition hall and will be hosted by educationalists over the two days of the event. Discussions are deliberately short, lasting only 12 minutes, and will be repeated four times per hour.
The Topic Surgeries will not be bookable. Visitors are able to join a Topic Surgery discussion at any time. For further information on all Topic Surgeries and to view the timetable, please visit the Scottish Learning Festival website.
11 am Wednesday 24 September: Barbara Gray of Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS) hosts a discussion group on the topic 'Working with the Draft Mathematics Experiences and Outcomes'. This is followed by a session on 'Numeracy and Mathematics within Curriculum for Excellence', chaired by LTS’s Amy Sinclair.
1 pm, Thursday 25 September: Maureen Morris of Aileymill Nursery invites you to join a discussion on 'Assessment is for Learning in the Early Years'. Charles McTrusty and George Smuga of the Scottish Government host 'Opportunities for Learning and Teaching within a New Framework'. This is followed by Lucy Conan and Nick Simons of BBC Scotland hosting a discussion titled 'BBC Scotland Learning: Preparing Learners for 21st Century Work and Life'.
The hour's discussions are rounded off with 'Using Assessment Of Learning to Support Assessment For Learning', hosted by Brendan Tiernay of the SQA and Myra Young of LTS.
Located in the exhibition area, the new Education Showcase features hands-on demonstrations of teaching and learning activities, stories and performances, launches and more. Included in the event's debut are The Discovery Hour and The Consolarium Challenge. The Discovery Hour showcases 10 of the most innovative, inspiring and 'doable' approaches to teaching and learning, with an emphasis on design, connections and play, whilst The Consolarium Challenge gives visitors the chance to compete on games consoles while learning more about games-based learning.
As always, the Scottish Education Village is the place to discover all the major developments in Scottish education. The Learning and Teaching Zone will highlight examples of innovative practice from various schools, new resources and feature areas of the Learning and Teaching Scotland Online Service.
Some highlights include Vicky Mackenzie of Lairdsland Primary School demonstrating how Nintendo Wii Sports can be used as the contextual hub for a cross-curricular project and how it can be shared through Glow, and Jean Carwood Edwards of LTS on 'Supporting Quality Early Education (0-8 years) in Scotland'.
