Aberdeen City Council aspires to be recognised in the City and beyond as a leading Council in Northern Europe by 2010. Our shared vision is to make Aberdeen a City for Learning, ready to play a full part in the knowledge economy required to meet the needs of modern Scotland. Transformation Strategies are being developed to set out an evidence-based picture of the choices facing Aberdeen City Council in planning and improving its services for children and young people and also adults over the next three to five years.

Aberdeenshire Council was formed in 1996 and provides all local government services in Aberdeenshire.  Aberdeenshire has a population of 233,442 and with over 12,000 staff the council is the biggest employer in Aberdeenshire.

The Department of Education is responsible for the delivery and continuous improvement of pre-school, primary, secondary and special education.  The service is delivered by 38 primary schools (roll of 2033 pupils) and 11 secondary schools (roll of 1858), of which seven provide only S1/S2 and four are presenting centres for SQA qualifications. Twenty-five of the 38 primary schools offer Gaelic Medium Education and there are currently 492 pupils enrolled in Gaelic medium classes.

Informal learning is supported through Community Learning and Leisure and can be access across a network of learning centres and libraries.
The authority works in collaboration with other education providers including three colleges of further and higher education within the University of the Highlands and Islands.

Infectious Grooves runs African and Samba percussion workshops for all ages and abilities. We work extensively within schools and nurseries using percussion to enhance the learning and play of children and training teachers to attain 100% of the curriculum’s musical outcomes.

North Lanarkshire Council is located in the West of Scotland and has a population of approximately 350,000. Learning and Leisure Services includes all education services, community information and learning (including community centres and libraries), and the sport functions that have not transferred to the recently-established Leisure Trust. Learning and Leisure Services is responsible for the statutory education for 55,000 pupils age 5-18 and has 25 secondary schools, 127 primary schools, 11 special schools and 70 nursery centres.

Scottish Borders Council Determined to Succeed has developed, in conjunction with the local authority ACE Enterprise interest group, a comprehensive package of support for primary school teachers in how to be enterprising in delivering the ACE curriculum. This will be demonstrated in the village.

Shetland Islands Council is the local authority serving the most northerly islands of Scotland.  Aith Junior High School with 189 pupils is one of 33 schools and provides nursery, primary and secondary education for pupils aged from 3 to 16.

South Lanarkshire Council was established in 1996 and is the fifth largest authority in Scotland. The council employs over 4,100 teachers and continues to fund the Schools Modernisation Programme.  Education Resources supports schools in developing the Curriculum for Excellence programme.

GIFTS is based at our own 70 pupil rural school. We train teachers in seven schools in Rural Gambia by working with them in their classes and bringing staff to Scotland. We help local Scottish schools get their Global Curriculum kick-started.
