| Gigajam - Music Lessons from LTS | ||

Guests at the Scottish Learning Festival will be able to hear more about the range of lessons that are available through Gigajam and be entertained by the music of children from Kingspark Secondary School. | Teacher Support Service’s ‘Creating the Conditions’ Launch | ||
| 13.00-13.45 | The charity Teacher Support Scotland (TSS) is to launch the findings of its 'Creating the Conditions' project, which was supported by the Scottish Executive Education Department and involved 18 schools in Fife and Renfrewshire. Creating the Conditions was designed to improve individual and organisational wellbeing with the aim of improving effectiveness. TSS will present the findings at SLF 2007 together with an interactive session where you will have the chance to look critically at your own wellbeing. This launch will be of great interest to everyone involved in education and especially those interested in the wellbeing and effectiveness of teachers. Summaries of the findings will be available and people involved in the project will be on hand to explain the process and outcomes. | Improving the Educational Outcomes of Looked After Children and Young People – The lessons learned so far | ||
| 14.00 | In October 2004 the Scottish Executive announced £6 million of funding to support pilots for raising the educational attainment of Looked After Children and Young People. Since then a total of 20 local authorities have been approved for funding, namely: Aberdeen City, Dumfries and Galloway, Dundee City, East Ayrshire, East Lothian, Edinburgh City, Falkirk, Fife, Glasgow, Highland, Inverclyde, Midlothian, North Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, South Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire, Stirling, West Dunbartonshire and West Lothian Councils. | 15.00-15.30 | Learning about Learning is an exciting, new web resource providing insights into how people learn. The site contains over 200 videos covering effective learning and teaching approaches adopted in Scottish Schools, information on the very latest concepts used in learning as well as the informed views of highly prominent commentators on learning. Sitting alongside other excellent websites such as Assessment is for Learning, it should prove to be a very useful resource for all individuals and schools interested in emerging theories, insights, principles and practices about how we learn. | Save the Children's 'Participation & Learning' DVD & Booklet Launch | ||
| 16.00-16.45 | The new staff development resource by Save the Children includes a DVD and a booklet for teachers. It presents inspiring work from 10 schools across Scotland illustrating examples of young people's participation, active learning and engagement. All Scottish schools will receive a copy and it will be available to download from the LTS website. | 10.00-10.45 | The new look Gàidhlig Air-loidhne will be launched at the Scottish Learning Festival in September. Teachers will be able to navigate the site more easily, with different sections for the educational levels. Searches also should be more targeted and more material is being uploaded every day. A colourful new interface adds to the attractiveness of the site. | Looked After Children and Young People: We Can and Must Do Better | ||
| 11.00 | In January 2007, the report 'Looked After Children and Young People: We Can and Must Do Better' was published by the Scottish Executive. The report was the result of a Ministerial working group looking at ways to improve the educational outcomes of Scotland’s looked after children and young people. One of the main findings of the working group and, as a result, one of the key messages from the report is that we need to work together if there is to be any improvement in outcomes for our looked after children and young people. There is nothing inevitable about Scotland’s looked after children and young people not achieving their potential. Schools can be the most stable part in a looked after child's life, and the relationship with particular teachers is often cited by care leavers as being of particular significance in their lives. The focus of this session will be to explore the role teachers play in the lives of looked after children and young people. In particular, the session will explore the role of teachers as CORPORATE PARENTS to our looked after children and young people. The session will be facilitated by Viv Boyle from the Scottish Executive (Improving Outcomes for Looked After Children Branch).
