National Museums Scotland offers a world of discovery through innovative learning experiences at its five museums:

  • National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh
  • National War Museum, Edinburgh Castle
  • National Museum of Flight, East Fortune
  • National Museum of Rural Life, East Kilbride
  • National Museum of Costume, New Abbey, Dumfries

Over 60,000 primary and secondary pupils a year take part in the exciting and innovative learning experiences we offer at our five museums. Our 2007-2008 schools programme has all the information you need to plan your class visit to our museums.

This year’s programme for primary schools covers many areas of the Curriculum for Excellence including Social Studies, Sciences, Technologies, Expressive Arts, Languages and Religious and Moral Education. From gallery visits to special events led by experienced facilitators and free object handling session where pupils can discover the past through direct contact with real and replica objects, our events are designed to help being our collections to life for your pupils, helping them to make connections between time and place, cultures and civilisations, science and technology and the natural world.

This year we are delighted to offer new outreach opportunities for primary schools which will help make our collections available to audiences across Scotland.

For secondary schools, National Museums are great places for young people to find inspiration to support their individual learning whether they are researching a particular subject area, developing art and design skills or simply opening their eyes to a wider world. If you are looking for workshops to support secondary curriculum learning and teaching, including Standard and Higher grade, you’ll find everything you need in our 2007-08 programme.

And it’s not just pupils who can benefit! There are CPD sessions for teachers including special exhibition previews and a chance for you to find out about the £46m project which will transform the Royal Museum into a museum for the 21st century.

To request a copy of our 2007-2008 schools programme email schools@nms.ac.uk or visit our website for information and resources to support your pupils’ studies. We look forward to meeting you in the Cultural Village as part of this year’s Learning Festival and to welcoming you and your pupils to National Museums Scotland this year.
