The National Library of Scotland is a major European research library and the world’s leading centre for the study of Scotland and all things Scottish. The Library holds over 13 million items including rare books, maps, music, official publications, moving images, foreign collections and manuscripts. The manuscripts collection includes many publishing and literary archives, including the John Murray Archive.

The Library’s many collections provide an insight into Scotland, the wider world and Scotland’s place within it. These encompass Mary, Queen of Scots, trade union history, the great Scottish scientists, literary giants Robert Louis Stephenson, Muriel Spark and Robert Burns, and modern writers such as Alsadair Gray, Ian Rankin and Ali Smith, to name just a few. The Library has a dedicated learning programme of workshops for schools and regularly produces teaching resources on a variety of topics. In addition, a wealth of material and resources are freely available online.

Teachers can register for their own reader’s ticket, giving access to our collections and to allow them to browse our catalogues to find material to help their own teaching.
