| Seminar Description | From boredom and failure - to fun, enjoyment and success through an overview of these kinaesthetic puzzles. Suitable for teachers of stages 2, 3, 4 and 5 wishing to stimulate, motivate and improve pupil thinking. This seminar will look beyond the “enjoyment” and view the Roadshow from the teacher perspective of “What are they learning?” The Spirit of the “Roadshow” has always been to keep each box of highly differentiated material intact, however this seminar will take certain types of activities from each of the boxes 1 to 6 and track their progression , examining how skills of numeracy, spatial awareness, language, creative and logical thinking are developed. There will also be an opportunity to have an introduction to box9 and “ Reality Maths” boxes 11 and 12 suitable for certificate classes. Here delegates will be able to look at the activities pupils most enjoyed, simple problems that will challenge the brightest and others that will test out their knowledge, application and aid decision making. These activities will also be available at the later “hands on” session. The resource originally developed by Liverpool Mathematical Society to celebrate their centenary in 1999 with 100 puzzles to support transition from primary to secondary has been further developed and now boasts a total of 300 puzzles to date. Development of a further box0 is envisaged for the near future. Dr I Porteous from Liverpool University will be available for questions. There is also an opportunity for teachers not familiar with this resource to find out more on www.maths.liv.ac.uk/lms/funmaths/ |
