Rediscovering student voice using ICT, including Glow, to support Curriculum for Excellence.

Estimates suggest 90% of classroom talk is by the teacher. To develop effective contributors and successful learners we need to reawaken the ‘student voice’ and allow our young people to critically engage with their learning. ICT, including GLOW, allows the opportunity to re-dress this balance by empowering students and allowing teachers to cut across subject and sector divides to create challenging and innovative learning experiences.

However in the fast moving world of technology it can be difficult to maintain a skills base that allows teachers to effectively use this resource. In an interactive presentation EIS Learning Representatives will demonstrate how we can support teachers in the implementation of ICT and the GLOW environment in the classroom. By:

• Supporting teachers identify the skills that are required to effectively use ICT and e-learning through GLOW to support effective teaching and learning and how this develops the explorative talk essential for CfE.
• Identify areas of continuing professional development to allow successful and confident use of ICT and e-learning through GLOW.
• Outlining methods for sharing good practice in the use of ICT and e-learning through GLOW.

Vicki Wallace is the EIS Multi-establishment Learning Representative for Midlothian. She has taught as a Support for Learning Teacher for the last four years in the secondary sector and is a fully accredited Chartered Teacher and is a partner tutor with Moray House School of Education. She began her career as a teacher of Chemistry in Edinburgh before moving to Midlothian. She is also part of the GLOW mentoring team for Midlothian region. She has a particular interest into how ICT can be utilized in the classroom to improve learning and teaching for pupils with additional support needs.

Stephen McCrossan is an EIS Multi-establishment Learning Representative for North Lanarkshire. He is part of the EIS national Learning Representative working group and North Lanarkshire’s CPD PRD Steering Group.He has taught Computing in Columba High School, Coatbridge for 15 years, and managed at faculty and departmental level for 12 years. Stephen is currently on a secondment as an ICT Development Officer (Secondary) in North Lanarkshire Council. He represents the EIS on the authority ICT Steering Group and is involved as an authority mentor for the GLOW programme.
