Seminar Description

East Dunbartonshire Council/Woodhill Primary School French-Anglo-Scottish Project 2007/8

Passeport Citoyenneté et Santé (Citizenship and Health Passport)

This is a joint education service/schools project as a result of an Anglo-Franco-Scottish Co-operation Agreement signed by former First Minister Jack McConnell.

The partners in this are: Scottish Government, Learning and Teaching Scotland, British Council London and Edinburgh, Institut Francais in Edinburgh and local authorities - East Dunbartonshire, Coventry and Nancy.

This is an education service innovation, driven, delivered and disseminated by Woodhill Primary School. It aims to develop young people's language learning in French and English by communicating with native French speakers.

It is in the form of a school blog and incorporates the use of podcasting. It is centred around good health and citizenship. A pilot group of eight primary children were working on this initially and will link with partner schools in Coventry, Birmingham and Nancy.

This session it is proposed to expand this from the initial group of eifgr children to the rest of the pupils in P7 and P6 (given the restrictions with regard to parental permission and the use of ICT). We are currently restructuring our modern languages programmes within the school to take account of these new approaches to teaching and learning.

These approaches are enabling us to take forward the Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) within modern languages in a new and very exciting way. This is 'Curriculum for Excellence in action'!

The children are well-equipped to meet the outcomes of CfE in modern languages through this programme and the approaches employed.

We regularly evaluate and review our progress with both staff and pupils and, to date, the enthusiasm of all involved is clearly evident. In October 2007, we held a meeting in Woodhill which was attended by our link partners from France and England as well as members of staff from our local secondary schools - Bishopbriggs Academy and St Ninian's High School. Both of these schools are now hoping to take forward the project at secondary level with partner schools in France and England.

Other schools in Scotland have spoken of the motivational aspects of this initiative.
