Seminar DateThursday 25 September

Duration45 minutes
Seminar Description

Throughout Scotland there is a wealth of support, guidance and resources available to the practicing teacher, the NQT and indeed the student teacher engaging with sustainable development education (SDE).

This seminar will highlight just what is available and demonstrate how SDE: can work for you whatever level of the curriculum you are working at or whatever your curricular area; can provide numerous examples of actual and potential cross-curricular and inter-disciplinary working; can provide staff and pupils with experiential learning and quite literally enliven the curriculum and make for a stimulating teaching and learning environment.

Participants will have the opportunity to make contacts and discuss with other teachers and practitioners the value of work in this area, the links to various outcomes and experiences contained within Curriculum for Excellence and become aware of the support networks available.

The seminar will illustrate current practice and focus on various topical issues such as fair-trade, ecoschools, climate change etc showing that many teachers are likely to already be engaged in aspects of sustainable development education and the route to fuller engagement is not difficult but also immensely rewarding for pupils and teachers alike.

Professional recognition - the seminar will also discuss professional recognition for work in the area of SDE which is now available via the GTC.School SDE policies - teachers and Senior Management Team members will be made aware of the contents of good SDE policies and shown how to rise to the challenge currently presented in HMIe pre-inspection questionnaire profiles.
