| Seminar Description | Numeracy is at the heart of Curriculum for Excellence as we aim for a smarter Scotland with a highly numerate population. “Establishing good numeracy skills is necessary for successful learning across the curriculum and developing these skills needs to be of high priority for all children, young people and their teachers.”
Building the Curriculum 1 This workshop will look at a range of strategies which are effective in developing numeracy skills, consider possible obstacles to raising attainment in numeracy and discuss the way forward within a national context. We will look at examples of good practice from around Scotland and the resources and support which are available from the Learning and Teaching Scotland website. |

| Speaker biography | Joe McLaughlin
Joe McLaughlin is seconded into Learning and Teaching Scotland from his post as a Principal Teacher of Mathematics in West Lothian. He is currently Team Leader for the National Literacy and Numeracy Team and is also a member of the Maths/Numeracy writing team for Curriculum for Excellence. He was previously chair of the Mathematics Advisory Group, Scotland and was seconded in West Lothian to liaise with local industry to enhance core skills in school leavers seeking employment. He has also worked on the “New Deal” programme in West Lothian. |
