Curriculum for Excellence – Active Learning in the Early Years

Within Curriculum for Excellence, the curriculum for the pre-school sector and the early years of primary will be presented together as one level.

Using examples of experiences and outcomes from the early level, this seminar will look at practical ways to support active learning, continuity and progression through pre-school, into Primary One and beyond.

Continuity and progression into Primary One is exemplified through collaborative working between Nursery and Primary children and staff.  There is exemplification of active learning environments which encourage children to be independent in their learning.  Finally there is exemplification of play and contextualised learning, using a Storyline approach, which enables children to learn through real life and imaginary contexts.

Lynda Bancroft is a Development Officer for Curriculum for Excellence with Learning and Teaching Scotland.  She is responsible for writing early level experiences and outcomes across the curriculum.

Before joining Learning and Teaching Scotland on secondment, Lynda was an early years teacher in Stirling, where she taught in a number of establishments.  She has contributed to INSET courses on Active Learning and the use of a Storyline Approach for local authorities throughout Scotland.
