This seminar will share nurture practice from across Scotland with specific examples of how primary and secondary schools have used creative and flexible nurturing approaches to support young people. The young people we serve need to learn about and develop in themselves the values on which our society is based, in order to build their own stances on social justice, personal and collective responsibility. The Curriculum for Excellence is an important means through which this personal development should be encouraged. Doing well at school is an important factor for the emotional health and wellbeing of young people. Nurture groups support young people who present emotional and behavioural difficulties, enabling them to remain part of their own class and school. These groups, staffed by adults as positive role models, provide safe, nurturing learning environment where each child is valued, understood and has emotional needs met appropriately. They support young people to build their individual skills via provision of stimulating, structured learning environments, appropriate feedback, and consistency in approach, enabling and engaging the learners. There are now around 1,000 groups across the U.K. not only in primary schools but at secondary level as well and many children, parents and teachers bear witness to the powerful impact that nurture groups have had on their lives. |
