Staying on rates affect the potential of a year group to gain awards in S6; therefore a low staying on rate may be part of the explanation for a low percentage of awards at this stage.

Attainment by the end of S6

Attainment by the end of S6 is reported as a percentage of the S4 year group from two years previously eg attainment in S6 in 2007/08 is calculated as a percentage of the S4 year group in 2005/06.

Pupils usually sit their Higher and Advanced Higher exams at the end of sixth year. Attainment is cumulative and includes successful awards gained in previous years at these levels.

Footnotes
**Counts and percentages for year groups which contain more than 0 but less than 5 pupils are replaced by asterisks (**) because they could be misleading or lead to identification of individuals.
##The symbol (##) has been inserted instead of figures for some schools and categories. This indicates that the data are not available or comparable with other years. Possible reasons for this include:
  • The school has recently opened or merged with another school.
  • S5 and S6 results for S1-S4 schools
  • S4, S5 and S6 results for S1-S2 schools
  • The relevant year group roll figure is zero
  • The school is temporarily closed
$$The symbol ($$) indicates that the school has chosen to omit this information as the figures may be misleading due to the fact that the school makes presentations for non Scottish examinations and/or receives pupils in to S5 and S6.

In order to present a more accurate picture of attainment by an entire cohort, attainment in S5 and S6 is reported as a percentage of the relevant S4 roll. For example, attainment by the end of S5 in 2007/08 is calculated as a percentage of the S4 roll in 2006/07. S6 attainment is calculated from the S4 roll in 2005/06.

Many independent schools take in significant numbers of pupils at S5 and/or S6. This will result in staying on rates and exam results in S5 and S6, which are calculated as a percentage of the original S4 roll, being very high and in some cases over 100%.

Many independent schools offer GCSE and A level examinations, which are not included in these tables. It should be noted, therefore, that in independent schools the percentage of the school roll gaining qualifications might not accurately reflect the achievement of pupils in these schools.

National averages have been calculated from the figures for all available local authority and grant-aided schools, whereas the local authority averages are based on local authority schools only.
