The Stewarts rose from being the Lord High Stewards of Scotland to become its ruling family.

The name Stewart comes from Robert II who was the 'High Steward of Scotland'. Mary Queen of Scots changed to the French form of the word and the family name changed to Stuart. This was used by James VI and his family when he became King of England as well as King of Scotland.
