On this section of the Scottish History website you can inspect some of the treasures held by the National Library of Scotland. Rare old manuscripts, photographs and maps are now available in digital format to everybody.

This website allows you to view artifacts close up, bringing you an amazingly lifelike browsing experience. Each image is accompanied by a video bringing you useful background information from an expert from the National Library. The images shed unique light on three periods of Scottish history spanning over 500 years.

Murthly Hours

The Murthly Hours is one of Scotland's great medieval treasures. Written and illuminated in Paris in the 1280s, it was one of the most richly decorated manuscripts in medieval Scotland.

Pencils of light

Photos taken from two albums of the Edinburgh Calotype Club, the first photographic club in the world, are among the earliest photograph albums in the world ever assembled.
