The people of Iron Age Scotland were known as the Celts. Some of them were also called Picts.
They lived in tribes or groups and had one chief, or person in charge.
The Celts would build round houses made of wood and thatch.
Many of the round houses were built together on top of a hill. A high fence was built around the village. There was a gate to let friends in. This was a hill fort.
In the north, people used stone to build towers or brochs.
Some Celts lived on islands found in the middle of a loch. This dwelling was called a Crannog.
All of these homes were built to protect the Celts, making them safe.
Many iron weapons were made. It is thought that battles may have been common.
When people weren’t fighting or making weapons they would have been farming, making pottery or clothing. They had a busy lifestyle.
