Scottish Enlightenment

Visit Enlightenment Scotland

The ‘Scottish Enlightenment’ resource was filmed at Pollok House in Glasgow, and Georgian House in Edinburgh, with kind permission of the National Trust for Scotland.

You can visit historic houses from the Age of Enlightenment across Scotland including Newhailes historic house, House of Dun, Broughton House, Culzean Castle and Haddo House.

Pollok House, Glasgow

Less than half-an-hour from the bustling centre of Glasgow is Pollok House, an amazing country house set in idyllic landscaped gardens.

At the heart of Pollok House is a small Georgian House that was expanded around 1900. A Georgian bridge, dating to 1757, spans the river and horse-drawn carriages still make their way through the grounds.

School groups are welcomed to Pollok House on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during term time. Book now as places fill up very quickly!

The Georgian House, Edinburgh

The Georgian House, at No. 7 Charlotte Square, has been magnificently restored to show a typical Edinburgh New Town house of the late 18th to early 19th century.

The fine collection of period furniture, porcelain, silver and glass, reflect the lifestyle and social and economic conditions of the time.

School visits exploring ‘Houses and Homes’, ‘Georgian Life’ and ‘Trainee Servants’ are available with costumes for children, a teaching pack and tours led by Education Guides.

Newhailes Historic House, Musselburgh

Step back in time at Newhailes Furnished Historic House, Newhailes Road, Musselburgh.

An incredible survival of early 18th century interiors, decorative art and collections - Newhailes historic house is a late 17th century ‘Villa’, surrounded by an 18th century Designed Landscape.

School visits are tailored to individual school’s needs, with an Education Officer and Ranger Service.
