Scottish Education Awards

About the Awards

Fiona Hyslop at the 2009 Scottish Education Awards ceremony

The Scottish Education Awards were first launched in November 2001 with the specific aims of celebrating the successes and recognising the achievements taking place within Scottish education. The awards are sponsored by the Scottish Government and the Scottish Daily Record and are supported by CBI Scotland, Learning and Teaching Scotland, Quality Meat Scotland, Scottish Qualifications Authority, Adventi and Glasgow City Council.

Entry to the Awards is open to all publicly funded schools, including secondary, primary, nursery and special schoools. There is a wide variety of school categories to enter which link to key policy initiatives such as International Education, Health & Wellbeing and Determined to Succeed. There are also individual categories which seek to recognise the dedication and commitment of teaching staff and education supporters.

Details of the 2009 category winners are now available.

The Scottish Education Awards are linked to the UK-wide National Teaching Awards, which are managed by the Teaching Awards Trust. For the first time, in 2005, two winners from the Scottish Awards went forward as finalists to the National Teaching Awards in London. 2006 saw four winners flying the flag for Scotland at the National Teaching Awards, with Susan Ward from Juniper Green Primary School in Edinburgh winning the National Award for Outstanding New Teacher. In 2007, six Scottish finalists went into the Teaching Awards.  2008 saw five of the Scottish Education Award winners going forward with two winning a Teaching Award. Shawlands Academy won the DCSF Award for Sustainable Schools and Mr David Miller from St Ninian's High School won The Guardian Award for Teacher of the Year in a Secondary School.
