Soutra Aisle

Soutra Aisle is the remains of what was the largest medieval hospital in Scotland - the House of the Holy Trinity complex, which also contained a friary.

It is said to have been founded by Malcolm the Maiden in 1164 and was run by an Augustinian order of monks. Its location on the main route between Edinburgh and the border with England ensured its wide renown.

Archaeological excavations at Soutra have given an insight into the workings of the medieval hospital. The digs were potentially hazardous as the site included pits where medical waste was buried.

Medicinal herbs and plants found at the site include hemlock, black henbane and opium poppy (which must have been imported to Scotland).
