Around AD 400 Ninian founded Whithorn - the cradle of Christianity in what would become Scotland.
The Christian saints of the early church included Ninian and Colum Cille (Columba). They were missionaries who created Christian centres and worked to spread the word among the kings and the people.
Native saints included St Moluag, St Drostan, St Maelrubha, St Ethernan, St Machar and St Hilda.
Between AD 400 and the Viking attacks of around AD 800, Christianity took root. Sacred sites, like natural springs and wells, became Christian as local pagan goddesses gave way to St Brigid and the Blessed Mary.
