Homecoming activities at The High School of Glasgow Junior School

The High School of Glasgow Junior School sent in the following details of its Homecoming activities...

Junior Five at the High School of Junior School have concentrated on celebrating Robert Burns's 250th Birthday. They made the school aware of this important event by making computerised posters about the Bard, presenting each pupil with a personalised bookmark which they had made on the computer and finished off with a flourish of tartan ribbon. Colourful bunting was made to hang in the main hall.

They helped design a placemat for each child on to which they put the Selkirk Grace and the words for Auld Lang Syne on the back.

On Friday 23rd January, one group of 5's performed 'To a Mouse' at assembly and gave each class a mouse balloon with the first lines of the poem handwritten on the back. They sent a Homecoming e-card and invited J2-6 to attend a Burns Supper.

A Junior 6 pupil piped in the haggis, while another group of 5's recited 'To a Haggis'. The Junior 5 Master of Ceremonies led us in the Selkirk Grace and much merriment was had while they ate their haggis, neeps and tatties and toasted the Bard with Highland water!

Another group of Junior Fives made a statue of what Scotland meant to them. The lunch was rounded off with a magnificent cake lit with '250' candles and the whole School linking arms to sing Auld Lang Syne.

A trio of trumpeters played the diners out of the hall!

After all their hard work the Junior Fives let off steam by having a ceilidh for the rest of the afternoon. They entertained each other with piano, violin, French horn, flutes, drums and singing pieces of music associated with Rabbie. They played games with Scottish words and enjoyed several Scottish dances.

The Junior Fives celebrations continued when they were fortunate enough to visit Rabbie's birthplace in Alloway on Monday 26th January. They had such a surprise to find Betty Davidson creep up behind them in the very clay biggin where Robert was born. They found themselves in Auld Kirk Alloway and pretended to be Tam on Meg peering in the window and galloped on to the Brig o'Doon where Meg lost her tail!
