Keills Primary School sent in the following details about its Homecoming activities...
All the boys and girls at Keills Primary School on Islay have been taking part in a range of exciting activities to celebrate Homecoming Scotland.
They started off the year by learning a Scottish or Burns poem.
They got together on Robert Burns Days and recited their poems to each other. They finished off the day with some homemade dumpling.
This term P5-P7 has been learning about Scottish music. Through various activities they have been learning about instruments played in Scottish music, different kinds of music groups and different styles of music. They have learned new Scottish songs and some of these are Gaelic. Pre5-P7 has started learning some Gaelic this term.
They have also all been participating in country dancing throughout the term. All the P6/7s on Islay will get together for a Day of Dance. This happens every year.
They are going to showcase all their learning at a Ceilidh, which parents and friends will be invited to. The Ceilidh will be organised and led by P4-7. They will recite poems and sing and dance the afternoon away. Everyone will have the opportunity to interact with some instrument games and will be rewarded with some Scottish nibbles made by the boys and girls.
The two schools on Islay are looking at life on the island before the clearances and emigration took hold. The school in Georgia will be looking at life for the immigrants when they first arrived in the new world. They are using a wiki to develop the links and share the information, images, etc they have found.
