Homecoming activities at Ancrum Primary School

Ancrum Primary sent in the following details about its Homecoming activities...

Between January and March all classes at Ancrum from P1 - P7 take part in a Scots Focus which involves learning Scots/Burns poems, Scottish songs and Scottish country dances.

For the first three weeks in January the whole school's topic was Scotland. They looked at famous Scottish people, famous Scottish landmarks and famous Scottish events.

It also includes pupils learning to play an instrument such as violin, piano, woodwind, chanter, pipes and learning Scottish 'airs'.

There is also an art competition with a Scottish/Burns theme.

This all culminates in three age-group Scots Focus 'finals' for infants, middle and upper, in which the finalists from each class perform in front of their peers (with teachers and house captains judging the various categories).

The children carried out lots of research using topic books and the internet, and also took part in many topic related activities. This is the second year they have used the first three weeks in January to study Scotland and aspects of our culture. The children are always very enthusiastic learners but they particularly enjoy learning about their country, its people and its culture. The children's work is proudly displayed throughout the school for all to see.

On Friday 23rd January they had a Burns lunch at school and a Scottish/Burns assembly where the children sang songs and recited poems. The parents and other members of our community were also invited and they all enjoyed a nice cup of tea and a wee bit of shortbread. The children were rewarded for their hard work with a cup of Irn Bru and a piece of shortbread.
