William MacTaggart (1903-1981)

Grandson of the artist William McTaggart, William MacTaggart (1903-1981) was born in Loanhead and studied at Edinburgh College of Art. Afterwards he travelled to Paris and throughout his career he was impressed and influenced by the work of European painters, particularly Georges Rouault and the Expressionists. He lived and worked in Edinburgh for most of his life and, like William Gillies, shared a closeness to the landscape of his upbringing. Specialising in landscape and flower painting, often on quite a small scale, MacTaggart developed a rich and intense use of colour and paint.
