| Description | Richard Davies (31) and Gillian Dykes (27) are both qualified to degree level. Prior to starting their business Richard worked as a ghillie on private estates on Lewis and Gillian worked for the Western Isles Tourist Board as its Niche Marketing Officer. They were looking for a new business opportunity and spotted a gap in the UK market for the popular American beefsteak snack, beef jerky.
They successfully applied to PSYBT in June 2002 and also secured start-up and marketing funding from Western Isles Enterprise and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar. Hard work, combined skills, strong customer focus and determination to succeed have contributed to the development of an already successful business. The business has been concentrating on marketing its product through its website and taking all its orders via e-commerce and email. Wild West Foods (UK) Ltd is growing steadily, ahead of plan. Its expansion plans include cutting out the middleman in its supply chain and importing its jerky direct to the UK from Uruguay and Argentina. It will be relocating to larger premises and will be purchasing machinery to automate and speed up the packaging process in the near future. It also has plans to improve its packaging and extend its product range to include vegetarian jerky. |
