Travelling Green

Author Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS)
Description

The Travelling Green project is designed to encourage children and young people and their parents to feel more confident about walking to and from school, and so increase their levels of habitual physical activity.

With increasing concern about the health and physical activity levels of Scotland's children and young people, the Scottish Government has provided funding to make the Travelling Green project and resources available to all schools in Scotland.

Originally researched in 2001 and developed between 2001 and 2005 by West Dunbartonshire Council and NHS Greater Glasgow (Health Promotion Unit), the revised Travelling Green resources accord with Curriculum for Excellence.  The experiences and outcomes of the project will enable children and young people to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.

The initial resources have now been developed into a practical, attractive and user-friendly teaching pack. A teachers’ handbook has been developed and the Travelling Green materials now comprise:

·        Pupil Information Guide

·        My Travel Challenge

·        A guide for parents about walking to school, incorporating a chart to record the journey home

·        A chart to record the journey to school

·        Reflective stickers.

The resource is available to every primary school in Scotland free of charge, but there is an expectation that schools will undertake some local training and also participate in the evaluation of the project if required. Training is accessible through your local School Travel Co-ordinator.
