Progress File

Author Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS)
Description

Progress File is a set of guides designed to assist individuals, from ages 12 to adult, to plan and manage their own learning and their career development. It helps them to recognise the knowledge, understanding and skills they are acquiring, and how to record these achievements effectively. It has been designed for users to dip in and out of to suit their individual needs, throughout their time in education, training, or employment.

The Progress File objectives are:

  • to equip people to plan and manage their learning and make effective transitions
  • to increase motivation and confidence to achieve
  • to stimulate learning to gain knowledge and skills, including where not recognised in national qualifications.

What's new about Progress File?

Research in schools across Scotland has shown that teachers would prefer to receive Progress File in a format that they can easily edit to suit their own local requirements.

Accordingly, the first three booklets of Progress File are available as a series of downloadable Word documents:

  • Getting Started (S1 and S2): broadly aimed at 12/14 year old students. The focus is on understanding and becoming skilled in the processes and activities of reviewing, recording and action planning.

  • Moving On (S3 and S4): broadly aimed at 15/16 year old students. The focus is on career planning and making applications for further education and jobs.

  • Exploring Pathways (S5 and S6): aimed at post-16 students still at school. The focus is on making applications (including to higher education), entry to work and continuing education.
